Homework Folders
These are to be brought home and returned to school daily. Student home-reading charts are included in the folders, and students and parents are asked to document daily that 15 minutes (or more) are spent reading at home. Please help your child remember to do this very important homework! Your support with reading at home insures your child's progress and is crucial to his/her reading success! Thank you!
Birthdays
Students are encouraged to bring an easy-to-serve/easy-to-eat treat for the class. (No drinks, please.) We have 20 students. Students may also bring a treat for the office staff (but are no longer allowed to take treats to other teachers in the school since it became too disruptive to the teaching and learning process). We celebrate each birthday with a warm fuzzies, a card, and a birthday song. All summer birthdays are celebrated on the last day of school.
Friday Tastes
In our classroom, good behavior is rewarded with good food on Fridays! On Mondays the class decides on a type of food (in keeping with our Science curriculum so far this year we'll be selecting fruits and seeds first). That word is put on the board (for example, apples, pomegranate, or seed soup). Letters are erased when the class's behavior is poor, and added when good behavior is exhibited. If on Friday all the letters are back on the board, we get our taste that afternoon. It's a fun way to introduce children to nutritious new foods and a great incentive for good behavior!
Information about AR (Accelerated Reader): Not only do we have a multitude of books to lend out daily in our classroom, but our class visits the media center on Thursdays where each student may check out two books at a time. Students take out one nonfiction AR book weekly and are expected to take an AR test on that book. Tests must be taken at school, and this can be done during our daily silent reading (E.R.P.--Everyone Reads Privately) time. Students will access the AR website through their Chromebook. After signing in with their username and password, students proceed to answer comprehension questions. It's expected that students will take at least one AR test every week as part of the reading standards for second grade.
Classroom Parties
Halloween Party
This year's Halloween Party will be held Wednesday, October 31, 2018. Students should wear as much of their costumes as possible to school (for example, tights and clothes that can pass for everyday wear) and bring the rest to school. Only three or four parents who have volunteered to help with parties will be able to attend, and those parents will help kids with their costume. Time for costume prep is limited, so please make it as simple as possible for your child, leaving any special make-up, etc. for trick-or-treating that evening. Our party will be held at the end of the day, and afterwards students will quickly change before dismissal. Our party parents will take care of all party planning. If you've indicated you'd like to help, either you'll be asked to plan, or to send in some food item(s). Thanks for volunteering!
